Month of May: Janai Robinson

It was the middle of summer, and I hadn’t done much but sustainability. Bee keeping, community garden club, stream team... my summer was disappearing. One day I joined a crop mob that Dr. Henke had organized. We drove to Illinois and worked on an organic farm. I pulled weeds out of the cabbage and peppers, stalked the tomatoes, and watched the owner milk her goat.
In the bus on the way back I sat next to the supt, and she invited me to join the chicken group. I was a little scared at the prospect-there were a lot of upper-classmen. Also, I knew absolutely nothing about chickens. By fall I was ready to give the chickenologist a try. This experience has been awesome. Pardon my pun, but I have really learned to spread my wings with these chickens. I have now presented to a big group in Chicago; I can research and write about chickens, and I helped community members learn about the value of urban chickens. I am so glad I said yes to the invitation. Janai Robinson (Class of 2015) |
